Chamber Soloists of Detroit at the DIA, with guest artist Timothy Braun
Well, the Chamber Soloists of Detroit have proved it. They have proved, by their recent Friday Night Live! performance at the Detroit Institute of Arts, that complex music composed in the twentieth century is compelling, understandable, and moving for general audiences. Of course, it helps when the music is performed at an exceedingly high level, which is what the Chamber Soloists of Detroit provided.
Violinist Timothy Braun and cellist Erik Ásgeirsson brought to life the music of Martinu, Kodaly, and Hosokawa. Hosokawa had us feeling introspective in a Zen sort of way and Martinu brought us west on the silk road to end up in Europe with riffs on folk dances by Kodaly. A neat journey.
The lovable gems of Mendelssohn (Trio in d minor) and Haydn (“Gypsy” Trio in G) were not forgotten and artistic director Pauline Martin joined her colleagues in memorable performances of those.
